Synopsis of Previous Council Action: The Council has authorized the Parks, Recreation and Community Services Department to submit an application to the United States Department of Agriculture since 1977. MAR 16 1588 Recommended Motion: That the Parks, Recreation and Community Services Director be authorized to apply for and administer a grant in the amount of $230,000 from USDA for the administration of the Summer Food Service Program for children. Description) Finance: Council Notes: Agenda Item No. # ' I 3113198 tjg summer lunch/usda CITY OF SAN BERNARDINO - REQUEST FOR COUNCIL ACTION STAFF REPORT AUTHORIZATION FOR THE DIRECTOR OF PARKS, RECREATION AND COMMUNITY SERVICES DEPARTMENT TO APPLY FOR AND ADMINISTER A GRANT IN THE AMOUNT OF $ 230,000 FROM U.S.D.A. FOR THE ADMINISTRATION OF THE SUMMER FOOD SERVICE PROGRAM FOR CHILDREN. This federally funded program for youth ages 18 years and under has been successfully operated since 1977. During the summer of 1997, forty feeding sites were established at locations in and around the City of San Bernardino. A daily average of 1,790 lunch meals and 946 snacks were served with a 44 day total of 78,747 lunch meals and 41,604 snacks. Between June 23 through August 29, 1997, this program provided nutritional help to children who would otherwise have been deprived of food assistance received under the National School Lunch Program. Meal preparation and delivery are contracted with the San Bernardino City Unified School District. This program is fully funded from the U.S.D.A Grant and no general funds are required. Additionally, approximately $7,200 in administrative costs are reimbursed to the city. This grant proposal application will cover program operations beginning June 29 through September 4, 1998. 3/9/98 tjg summer lunch/usda
