CITY OF SAN BERT iRDINO - REQUEST L JR COUNCIL ACTION
STAFF REPORT
Approval was given, at the Council meeting of 1-23-95 ,
for the expenditure of $30 , 000 to finance the improvement of the
Rialto Avenue grade crossing, west of Mt. Vernon Avenue. This
improvement was to consist of the railway tracks being lowered
0 . 5 feet by Santa Fe forces, and the adjoining asphalt concrete
pavement being removed and replaced to match the new grade by the
City ' s contractor.
A contract has been awarded by the City Administrator for
the low bid price of $20 , 940 .
Below is an estimate of the total project cost:
Construction Contract $ 20 , 940
Contingencies (15%) ± 3 , 460
TOTAL ESTIMATED PROJECT COST $ 24 ,400
Santa Fe has proposed that rubberized crossing material
be installed, in lieu of timber planks, due to the improved
riding quality. Rubberized crossing material normally costs
about $260 per linear foot. However, due to the large quantity
on hand for the Metrolink project, Bob Brendza has advised that
the material can be acquired for $160 per linear foot, which
equates to about $13 , 000 .
There is an available balance of $5 ,600 in the original
allocation of $30 ,000 . Supplemental funds in the amount of
$7 , 400 will be needed to fully finance the additional cost of in-
stalling rubberized crossing material.
We recommend that the approved expenditure for this
project be increased from $30 , 000 to $37 ,400 , in order to have
rubberized crossing material installed.
URGENCY CLAUSE:
Santa Fe is scheduled to lower the tracks on 3-20-95 . Therefore,
a decision on this additional expenditure must be confirmed on
this date.
