THE VICE PRESIDENT

Mr . John Stevens

Dear Mr . Stevens :
Thank you for contacting use with your concerns about the
proposed radioactive waste facility for Ward Valley, California .
I appreciate hearing from you on this important issue .
It is my understanding that Secretary Babbit has contacted
Governor Wilson and expressed this Administration ' s interest in
conducting a formal hearing on the record, with expert testimony
and cross-examination , before any decisions on land transfers are
made . This issue has generated a great deal of controversy , and
this Administration strongly believes that a formal hearing will
prove beneficial .
After careful consideration , this Administration is not
prepared to transfer the Ward Valley site to the State of
California under FLPMA until a formal hearing is held. We have
asked the Governor to schedule such a hearing, which should be
presided over by a disinterested party .
I understand and share your concern that the problem of low-
level radioactive waste disposal is a serious one . Please be
assured that we are committed to a program of nuclear waste
management that is safe , efficient , and effective for the long
term.
Again , thank you for writing to me .
Sincere
Al ore
