RE: REQUEST FOR RATE INCREASE FOR CLERKS AND JUDGES
SERVING ON ELECTION BOARDS
I would like to request and recommend that the Mayor and City
Council approve a rate increase for clerks and judges who serve
on election boards. The last rate increase ocurred three years
ago and it has come to my attention that the County is currently
paying $5 more than the City pays to clerks and judges.
Listed below are the rates currently paid by the City and County:
CITY OF SAN COUNTY OF SAN DIFFERENCE
BERNARDINO BERNARDINO
Inspectors: $70 $70 NONE
Judges: $50 $55 City-$5 less
Clerks: $50 $55 City-$5 less
I
Since the County pays $5 more to Judges and Clerks and also
coupled with the fact that our polling places will now be open an
hour later - 8 p.m. , I believe we need to raise poll workers'
salaries in order to retain the election workers. Election
workers work a minimum of 14 hours at the polls in addition to
the training class they are required to attend.
Each polling place has one inspector, one judge, and two clerks.
Therefore, the cost to increase judges and clerks' salaries by $5
will be $1485 (99 polling places X 3 = 297 judges and clerks x
$5) , plus $30 for clerks/judges on two extra boards, for a total
of $1515 for the May 4th general election.
Since our consolidation of polling places resulted in less
polling places than we budgeted for, we will have a total savings
of $1760 from the primary and general elections which can be used
to cover the increased rates.
RECOMMENDED MOTION:
THAT THE CITY CLERK BE AUTHORIZED TO INCREASE RATES PAID TO
JUDGES AND CLERKS SERVING AS ELECTION OFFICERS AT POLLING
PLACES FROM THE CURRENT RATE OF $50 TO $55 EFFECTIVE MAY 4 ,
1993.
