CITY OF SAN BERNA_ .DINO - REQUEST FO_ COUNCIL ACTION
STAFF REPORT
RESOLUTION AUTHORIZING AN AGREEMENT
WITH RITA CORONADO FOR THE FURNISHING
OF MENTOR COORDINATOR SERVICES.
The Mentor Coordinator position was approved for funding by City Council on November 21,
1994. This action was a result of recommendations by the Youth Committee which was
comprised of members of City Council, City staff and the I.C.U.C. (Inland Congregations
United for Change).
The Youth Committee reviewed the concept of developing a Mentoring Coordinator position to
work with San Bernardino City Unified School District to recruit, train and assign volunteers
to work as mentors with intermediate school student. This position is contracted due to the fact
that it is funded for one year only. The Youth Committee participated in the screening of this
candidate. Cost for the one year contract is not to exceed $29,000.
The candidate, Rita Coronado, was judged to be the best qualified candidate by both the Youth
Committee and this department. She has held positions with the City of Colton as Community
Youth Project Coordinator and Early Intervention Counselor. She has also held positions
of Hispanic Outreach Project Coordinator, Substance Abuse Liaison for Colton Joint Unified
School District and School/Community Relations Facilitator.
In order to initiate this program as soon as possible and before the schools go on Summer
recess, it is necessary to have this item on the April 17, 1995 agenda.
