Subject:
Resolution of the Mayor and Common Council of the City of San Bernardino
Establishing Art Night 2016 as a City Sponsored Event. (#4114)
Current Business Registration Certificate: Not Applicable
Financial Impact:
Motion: Adopt the Resolution.
In July of last year, Yolanda Macias, a 2014 Arroyo Valley High School graduate,
approached the City with a series of ideas to engage youth in the community through
the arts. One of Ms. Macias' ideas, based upon similar programs in surrounding
communities, was an art walk. A small group of staff from Community Development,
Parks and Recreation and the City Clerk's Office met initially to discuss how and if the
City could successfully host an art walk or an art night program. Additionally we have
engaged the Fine Arts Commission and staff from the San Bernardino City Unified
School District, San Bernardino Valley College, and Cal State San Bernardino to
discuss format, presentation and execution of an Art Night.
Art Night 2016 has several important goals:
• Highlight the visual and performing art of students from across the City
• Show younger students that art can be a career
• Generate interest and economic development activity in downtown
The outline for the program is as follows:
• Art Night is Thursday, May 19, 2016 from 5:00 - 8:00 PM
• Open to students from City schools 6th through 12th grade
• Open to students from San Bernardino Valley College and Cal State San
Bernardino
• Open to participants in the Parks & Recreation Art program
• Art will be displayed in City Hall, Mexican Consulate, Guatemalan Consulate,
Vanir Tower and Court Street Square
• 3-5 food trucks will be on-site
Anticipated attendance of 1500

Street life and pedestrian activity are necessary ingredients to revitalize an area. This
event will draw approximately 1500 participants to the downtown area. Art Night will be
marketed to families, students and the general public. Over the past few months the
idea has evolved through the input and collaboration of the hard work of the individuals
involved. I believe the program is at a point where it can be announced publicly and we
can start marketing and advertising Art Night 2016.
The project has been a true collaborative effort between the Fine Arts Commission, City
School District, Valley College and Cal State San Bernardino. It also shows how one
student's big idea can serve to increase community involvement, introduce residents
and visitors to the arts, and bring renewed interest to the downtown core and the entire
City.
