Presentation Feb 16, 2016 630pm
Situation-Team 3 during our current winter quarter was assigned the responsibility of conducting a
community assessment within identified boundaries of San Bernardino. The purpose for this was to not
only learn about the community and its people, but to identify the strengths and weaknesses within.
The identification process was conducted through a series of 30 multiple choice surveys containing 25
measured questions. In addition to the 25 multiple choice questions,we allowed the respondent to
answer 2 "open-ended" questions to further specify any issues that were not previously mentioned.
Within our surveys once returned, the problems identified through the measured choice responses were
the following-
Poorly Lit Streets-87%
Appearance of Neighbors Homes-83%
Response Time of First Responders-73%
The open ended questions contained response with concerns of the homeless population.
Mission-Our team was tasked with identifying a course of action to one of the identified issues
presented from the surveyed response. Our topic of choice was "Appearance of Neighbors Homes."
I When we further broke down the responses to this issues, the following data was assembled-
The survey that we conducted was within the limits of this community and is based on the opinions of
the residents within these limits.
I
• 23.3%think that the appearance of the homes within this community is poor
• 26.7%think that the appearance of the homes within this community is below average.
• 33.3%think that the appearance of the homes within this community is good or
I satisfactory.
• 16.7%think that the appearance of the homes within this community is above average.
• 0%think that the appearance of the homes within this community is excellent.
Our recommendation to resolve this choice topic is the commencement of a "Pride in Community Day."
This will be a quarterly event in which it will take place on the 15t Saturday of every 3rd month. The
primary objective is the cleanliness of the neighborhoods, but more importantly the building of
friendships and bonds with neighbors in their communities. To facilitate this, the county can strategically
place dumpsters throughout neighborhoods to allow families to remove trash, pick up shared locations
of debris and working together. This overall intent can build bonds between neighbors, and allow for
each other to work together with more empathy if scenarios occur that are much more drastic i.e.
earthquakes,fire, etc.

Administration Summary-
This presentation, its findings, and the response of action are the work of six college juniors in
the first year of a two year track Social Work Program while attending California State University of San
Bernardino. Although we have identified issues of shortfalls that required a plan of action, in no way is
this an overall assessment or opinion of the city of San Bernardino as a whole. The six team members
over the last six weeks have had the opportunity to learn a tremendous amount of knowledge as this
applies to the city of San Bernardino and the people who reside within the communities. If anything, we
have learned about the tremendous strengths of the people, our history, culture, and the community as
a whole. It has been our sincere privilege to conduct this assessment, but more so the opportunity to
present these finding to the city's leadership.
After much "brainstorming" of the many ways of resolving an identified shortfall, it will always
be the practice of Social Workers to respond with a main effort of empowerment. For this city and the
individuals to truly recover from these issues of garbage, appearance, or homelessness, we need to
come together for the good of the community. Budgets can be passed, financial priorities assigned to
areas of importance, but this issue can, and needs to be resolved through empathy for one another and
pride within the city we live in. For the city to come together, its officials, veterans, first responders,
students, and every citizen can accomplish this through "Pride in the Community Day".This can be
conducted on the third Saturday of every quarter, volunteers can meet at Orange Show Event Center
parking lot, with the support of one to two school buses through the support of the school district, move
our volunteers to areas identified in advance and clean up our community. Like other communities who
have experienced a natural disaster such as a tornado, earthquake, or hurricane, we can come together
and repair this self-inflicted disaster of cleanliness with pride. These sort of community actions can
create bonds, friendships, and resolve. These tangibles will be invaluable when a real natural disaster
strikes, we will know one another, appreciate one another, and look out for one another that much
more. What is the perspective and who should hold it? It is the perspective of pride and everyone who
lives in San Bernardino and has children in the community should attain this.
How do we repay the volunteers? It is just that, they are volunteers that are intended to
perform these actions out of the pride within the city they live in. When this picks up and more become
involved, which they will, we can address the manner in which a "thank you" is extended. Raffles, gift
cards, and material items can be presented, but these sort of gifts are short lived. To begin a strong
appreciation of community, we recommend a "Certificate of Appreciation".This sort of"Thank you"
signed by a city official will go much further, and the individual who has performed such duties and has
received this sort of thanks will be remembered for years to come.To a young student who is beginning
their career, this certificate is a strength on a resume. To a citizen of San Bernardino, this is something
that they can place on their wall to remember the day they helped make a change. This sort of
reciprocation is what can carry a program such as"Pride in Community Day"for the long haul. It is the
duty of every citizen within the city to become its stakeholder, for our children and future generations.
Let's start today.Thank you.
