CITY OF SAN BERNARDINO - REQUEST FOR COUNCIL ACTION
STAFF REPORT
In January, San Bernardino was awarded a $22, 000 grant for a
bicycle safety program. The project is a collaborative effort
between the California Healthy Cities Project and the State and
Local Injury Control Section of the California Department of
Healthy Services. The grants have been awarded to four cities to
develop and implement a community-centered program activity
designed to promote injury prevention in one or more areas.
The Healthy Cities Steering Committee applied for the grant after
they determined that there is a need in San Bernardino for a
program that would help prevent bicycle related injuries and
promote bicycle safety. An application outlining a bicycle safety
program for the City of San Bernardino was submitted to the
California Healthy Cities Project in December.
The one year project will include bicycle safety classes, two
Bicycle Safety Rodeos, and safety helmets to youth who attend the
safety classes. The project will be a collaborative effort with
Police, Fire, Parks and Recreation, Adopt-A-Bike, and the City
Administrator's Office.
In order for the grant to be issued, City Council must accept the
Bicycle Safety Program. The City's contribution will be in-kind
contributions; no City funds will be directly expended.
It is recommended that the City Council direct staff to implement
the Bicycle Safety Program, and accept the grant award. If council
members are interested in learning more about the project, please
contact the City Administrator's Office.
