Description) Finance: Council Notes: /o> & AGENDA ITEM NO. - CITY OF SAN BERNARDINO - REQUEST FOR COUNCIL ACTION STAFF REPORT In keeping with our goal of trying to eradicate blight and the crime related problems associated with it, I would like to propose that the Council consider adopting a Neighborhood Pride Program. This program would consist of resident community volunteers, one chosen by each Council Member, who would be responsible for driving throughout the representative Ward to view the residences on a quarterly basis. These volunteers would be listing the addresses of residences who take special pride in the overall appearance of their homes. They would consider such things as: 1. Overall appearance 2. Landscaping 1) Has good design and imagination been used? 2) Has it been well maintained after the original planting? 3. Buildings, fences, walls, driveways 1) Have exterior surfaces been painted regularly? 2) Have driveway surfaces been maintained and kept free of oil and grease? 3) Are fences or block walls in good repair? 4) Have all necessary repairs been completed? Please note that our neighborhoods contain homes of many different designs and construction standards. A home's architectural design and the affluence of the neighborhood should not be the primary criteria for selection. Annually these volunteers would meet to select one home from each Ward to receive special recognition, from the City, for maintaining an outstanding residence contributing to the beautification of the City of San Bernardino. This program would not cost the City any money, but would show our appreciation to those citizens who work hard to help beautify their neighborhoods. Such a program may encourage others to take pride in helping eradicate blight and strive to beautify our great City. Please note: Several other California cities have instituted such programs with very good results.
