CITY OF SAN BERNARDINO - REQUEST FOR COUNCIL ACTION
STAFF REPORT
RESOLUTION APPROVING IN CONCEPT A
MENTORING COLLABORATIVE BETWEEN THE
CITY OF SAN BERNARDINO AND THE COUNTY
OF SAN BERNARDINO COMMUNITY SERVICES
DEPARTMENT.
On June 20, 1995, the State of California created the California Mentor Initiative as a public-
private statewide mentoring program for youth in at-risk conditions. The initiative is intended
to provide the support and culturally sensitive guidance which they require to become productive
members of society.
The Initiative was created in response to the fact that California faces a crisis of absent fathers
and teenage pregnancy that are having a devastating effect on children.
The State created the Initiative to expand the number of trained mentors in California and by
bringing together existing mentor programs to create a comprehensive network of resources to
serve youth in at-risk conditions. San Bernardino County Community Services Department
intends to apply for the grant and establish a coalition with existing agencies providing mentoring
services. The maximum grant amount is $100,000 per county and the principal objective is to
enhance and increase existing mentoring efforts and programs and establish a systematic public
awareness and marketing programs targeted toward the private sector.
The City of San Bernardino is expected to benefit from this coalition through increased
volunteerism and donations from the marketing efforts and possible direct funding for part time
staff support to expand existing services.
Justification for Supplemental Agenda
The application deadline for the grant is due April 1, 1996. This material was received too late
to place on the regular agenda.
