RESOLUTION OF THE MAYOR AND COMMON COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SA
2 BERNARDINO ESTABLISHING THE POSITION OF PARK RANGER, PART-
TIME/EXTRA-HIRE AND APPROVING THE JOB DESCRIPTION.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE MAYOR AND COMMON

COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SAN BERNARDINO AS FOLLOWS:

6 SECTION 1: The position of "Park Ranger, Part-time/Extra-Hire", Range PT, $20.0
7
per hour, is hereby established and the job description for said position, attached hereto a

Exhibit"A", is approved.

SECTION 2: The Director of Human Resources is authorized to update Resolution
10
Nos.97-244 and 2014-161 to reflect these actions.

Park Ranger(Part-Time)
JOB SUMMARY
Under general supervision, performs varied and routine ranger patrols in assigned areas within
the City with emphasis on park patrol, crime prevention and park protection; to perform related
work as required and ensure the safety and orderly conduct of the public.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
The Park Ranger position is assigned to the Police Department. The Park Ranger may direct
individuals regarding security and safety issues as needed. Supervision is received from the Chief
of Police or his designee. Incumbents are subject to extended shifts or rotational duty
assignments to include weekends. The Park Ranger is armed.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The duties listed below are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work that may
be performed. The omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude it from the
position if the work is similar, related or a logical assignment to this class.
1. Patrols assigned City parks using a City vehicle or bicycle to enforce applicable laws,
rules and regulations.
2. Issues municipal citations.
3. Maintains a log of activities and incidents; prepares written reports.
4. Coordinates with or assists Parks, Police and Fire Department personnel regarding
incidents and investigations involving City parks.
5. Assists as needed for special events and programs; and working with after school
programs.
6. Directs vehicular and pedestrian traffic.
7. Responds to calls for service in City Parks.
8. Testifies in court and responds to requests for crime prevention services.
9. Provides courteous and expeditious customer service to the general public and City
department staff.
10. Attends in-service training programs.
11. Routinely adheres to and maintains a positive attitude towards City and Department
goals; and performs related work as required.
GENERAL QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge of:
1. Correct English usage, spelling, grammar and punctuation. Basic and legible report
writing skills.
2. City, county, state and federal rules, laws and regulations as they apply to public health,
public safety, parking, and public nuisance issues in City Parks.

3. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with City staff, the public, and
other encountered in the course of work.
4. Operate City owned radios, vehicles, and bicycles.
5. Operate assigned equipment and vehicles safely and follow safe work practices and
procedures.
6. Work effectively and safely without direct supervision.
7. Analyze situations and take effective action; complete formal training courses on job-
related responsibilities.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education, Training and Experience:
A typical way of obtaining the knowledge, skills and abilities outlined above is graduation
from high school or G.E.D. equivalent.
Licenses; Certificates; Special Requirements:
A valid Class "C" California Driver's License is required at the time of appointment and as a
condition on continued employment.
Must possess a valid PC 832 Arrest and Firearm certification at time of employment.
Must be 21 years of age or older. No conviction of a felony offense or misdemeanor
offenses involving moral turpitude. Must be of acceptable character and stability as
determined by a background investigation.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an
employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this class. Reasonable

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit; talk or hear,
both in person and by telephone; use hands to finger, handle and feel computers and standard
business equipment; and reach with hands and arms. The employee is equally required to stand
and walk; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, bend, crouch or crawl; and lift up to 25 pounds.
Employees must also require sufficient mobility for walking, standing, sitting for prolonged
periods of time. Employees must also be able to hear in the normal audio range, with or without
correction. Employee may also be required to ride a bicycle for some park patrol functions.
Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, use of both
eyes, ability to distinguish basic colors and shapes, depth perception, peripheral vision and the
ability to adjust focus. See in the normal visual range, with or without correction; vision sufficient
to read small print, computer screens and other printed documents.

The employee will work in outside weather conditions, is exposed to wet conditions, and
street/road traffic. The employee is periodically exposed to loud noise levels.
Must be available to work a flexible schedule, including weekends, holidays, day/night, and
swing shift.
