CITY OF SAN BERNARDINO - REQUEST FOR COUNCIL ACTION
STAFF REPORT
Subject:
Authorization to Establish A Two- Way Stop at the Intersection of 35th Street and Genevieve
Street.
Background:
The Traffic Engineering Section received the referenced request from a resident in the area near
the intersection. The requestor is concerned because this intersection is the only one that is
uncontrolled in her neighborhood. She claims that this situation causes confusion to motorists
and has been the cause of several "near misses". She feels that controlling the intersection would
resolve the situation.
Traffic Engineering Staff evaluated the request. This is an uncontrolled intersection in an
entirely residential area. All the other intersections in the immediate vicinity are controlled by a
2-way stop. The intersection is difficult to see on the northbound and southbound approaches due
to heavy vegetation. There are dips across the east and west legs. There have been no recorded
accidents within the last three (3) recorded years. The following are estimated volumes on these
streets:
North & Southbound on Genevieve Street approximately 700 vehicles per day
East & Westbound on 35th Street approximately 300 vehicles per day
Due to the limited visibility on the north and southbound approaches, staff recommends that the
intersection be controlled by a 2-way stop. This will also make this intersection consistent with
all the other intersections that are already controlled within this area. Since 35th Street carries
less traffic than Genevieve Street, it is further recommended that east and westbound traffic stop.
The Traffic Safety Committee evaluated this request on July 12, 2000. The Committee
concurred with the findings of staff, and therefore recommended the installation of a two-way
stop at this intersection.
Financial Impact:
The estimated cost of$ 400.00 for installing the new "stop" signs will come from General Fund
Account No. 001-187-5111 (Signing and Striping Materials).
Recommendation:
Adopt Resolution establishing a two-way stop at the intersection of 35th Street and Genevieve
Street.
