Sarah Pearson will fill the position of Fire Marshal(U)which has been left vacant as the Q
result of the retirement of the previous Fire Marshal in May of 2013. The position was
later eliminated in August of 2013 but due to the increase of development within the City
Cn
of San Bernardino, the department realized its critical need and had the position
reestablished at the beginning of 2015. The established salary and benefits budgeted
when the position was reinstated was a total compensation package(including salary and
benefits)of$119,457.25 per year. The difference between the current budgeted salary at
Step 1 and the requested salary at Step 8 is approximately$7,200.00(including salary
and benefits)per year. Community Fire Risk Reduction is solely funded by Proposition Q
218 funds thru the Commercial and Multi-Family Inspection Program. The funding
generated by the Fire Prevention Bureau will absorb the salary difference of$7,200.00.
Packet Pg. 72
Step 8 is being requested in order to offer a competitive salary and retain the candidate
long term. The experience Pearson currently possesses relating to the duties the Fire
Marshal position will take on,also merits the requested salary step. Ms. Pearson is the top
candidate selected having successfully completed a thorough application screening and
oral interviews. Ms.Pearson is currently qualified and certified as a Fire Marshal by the
California State Fire Marshal's office.
Ms. Pearson started with the department as a Fire Prevention Officer in 2003,promoted y
to a Senior Fire Prevention Officer in 2005,promoted to Fire Prevention Supervisor in
2008 and was subsequently reclassified to Community Fire Risk Reduction Supervisor in c
2011. We believe Ms.Pearson's established experience and education make her well
qualified to fill this position and a continued valuable asset to this department. o
