Public Health/Community Based
12/02-Present FAME (Families of African American Ancestry Manifesting our Excellence) Program
Community Consultant Position. The program synthesizes Traditional African Dance and
Nutrition Awareness to combat obesity in the African-American community of San Berardino
County. Responsible for originating key concepts that are a basis of the programs Nutrition and
Physical Activity Curriculum
Key Responsibilities:
• Training: Conducted training for staff,to teach them choreography,get them adjusted to the
teaching environment,
• Anticipated potential barriers to the success of the project and strategized methods to
neutralize these barriers.
• Assessed and evaluated how the FAME project has increased local capacity of the African
American community to have access to/increase fruit and vegetable intake and be physically
active each day.
• Developed a:
• Nutrition based dance curriculum(8 to 10 lessons)for youth 6 to 14 years old that
meets sate standards(adaptable age groups)accompanied by a teaching manual;
• Video that teaches all aspects of the choreography/nutrition and dance
• Assisted FAME in connecting with community service,and faith based organizations that
would be supportive of the project(i.e. sororities/fraternities,service clubs,student clubs,
etc.)
• Used Community Based Social Marketing concepts as the template when conceptualizing
methods for accomplishing work-plan objectives and activities
• Connected the FAME project to existing micro/macro events within the community(i.e.
Black History Month event possibilities,African Village at the National Orange Show,and
the City Of San Bernardino 4`h Of July Parade)
• Connected with local television media to cover project activities and air the FAME video.
2002 "Gone too Soon":-Antismoking pro :African American Youth Communfty Based Pro
Educating the community about the hazards of smoking. The components of the program included
educational awareness and using the arts as a vehicle for demonstrating that there are other more
constructive outlets for youthful energy besides engaging in this destructive,addictive habit.
1996 "Dreams Do Come True": Inspirational Youth Community Based Program
Offering affordable performing arts classes in South Central Los Angeles, California. The purpose
of this program was to showcase inner city talent while building self-esteem through participation
in performing arts based activities that are normally not offered in this community.
1994 "Lean On Me": Hand Helping Hand Program
Developed to facilitate bond formation between youth/peers. The focus was on teaching and
encouraging youth to provide positive support for each other. Anger management, conflict
resolution and other life skills techniques were peer mediation methods and techniques were
shared with the youth to cultivate a more positive progressive attitude in the youth towards
themselves and each other.
1994 "Gone Too Soon": Taking time ime to Appreciate the gifts of life before they are gone
Educating the community about appreciating life. Performing Arts was used as a way of helping
youth to learn discipline and perseverance, consistency and diligence and as a means for
developing a deeper intuitive sense for discriminating between a) what's good for them and b)
what's not; and subsequently acting on that realization by appreciating and maximizing those daily
things that defined their existence in a positive way.
