School Leadership Team f Gary Dehrer, Principal Marcia Lewis, Head Counselor Alma Angelo, Vice Principal Cid Cardenas, Program Specialist Charlie Brown, Vice Principal Enrichment Fee-Based Classes Janice Roselius, Vice Principal Heck Thomas, Student Resource Specialist Glenda Lopez, Coordinator Jennifer Oberhelman, Specialist Communications/Marketing The 2006-2007 school year witnessed literally thousands of student success stories and positive educational outcomes that have forever changed lives and our community. The San Bernardino Adult School completed its 87th year since starting classes at San Bernardino High School in 1920. The Adult School thrives on both student and staff successes as well as the achievement of educational outcomes. For the first time in its long history, the Adult School underwent a full West- - ern Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) accreditation visit. During the period of March 11-14, 2007, the Adult School was visited by a seven- member WASC team to have its Self-Study verified and to become fully accredited as an educational institution. What the WASC experience confirmed is what the community has long known, the San Bernardino Adult School is an excellent educational choice for the lifelong learners of this community. You are invited to look over our Annual Report Card to discover in what ways the Adult School is making an incredible difference in the Inland Empire. GARY DEHRER, Principal About San Bernardino Adult School The San Bernardino Adult School (SBAS), the 23rd largest adult school in the state, was established in 1920 to meet the changing educational needs of the community. SBAS is part of the San Bernardino City Unified School District (SBCUSD). SBAS started with evening classes including, but not limited to, bookkeeping, woodshop, English, math, chemistry, millinery, sewing, and cooking. SBAS currently has 49 course titles approved by the California Department of Education (CDE) for the 2006-2007 school year. Programs currently include High School Diploma, GED, Adult Basic Educa- tion, English as a Second Language, Career Technical Education, Parenting Education, Adults with Dis- abilities, Older Adults, Apprenticeship, and Enrichment Fee Based classes. SBAS has, in addition to its main campus located at Base Line and "E" Street, over 60 off-site locations where programs are currently held. SBAS future planning envisions new satellite locations serving the west and east areas of SBCUSD, including part of the city of Highland. Initial planning is underway to enter into collaboration with the Highland Branch Library, which is currently under construction and expected to be open to the public in the fall of 2007. SBAS continually upgrades the main campus to meet students' needs and currently has 44 classrooms, including six computer labs, a book store, a Counseling Center, a Student Library, a Parenting Center, a Student Resource Center and a GED Testing room. Counseling and Student Support Services The Counseling Center provides academic, educational, and personal counseling. During the 2006- 2007 school year more than 8,810 students received services through the Counseling Center. The Adult School employs two full time counselors during the day and one part-time counselor in the evenings. There is an additional counselor who serves the ESL program each evening classes are held. The Student Resource Center provides support services that make it possible for many students to stay in school and complete their chosen programs. Over 5,000 students received services through the Student Resource Center. This Center helps overcome barriers by providing information on job search and job readiness, homelessness, career opportunities, and other roadblocks that could cause students to leave the program. The Center also introduces students to volunteer opportunities in the community. The Parenting Center served over 200 children and their parents this year by providing parent educa- tion and free quality child care for children ages 2-5 years old. The Center enables parents with child care barriers the opportunity to complete their academic or vocational education while enhancing their parenting skills and preparing their child for kindergarten. W t Student & Program Data 200672007, Reaching for the Stars DUPLICATED ENROLLMENT HSD 3787 ' My name is Carmen Esquevil and I graduated from the San ABE 2267 Bernardino Adult School.
