HomeMy WebLinkAbout06.B- Council Office 6.B DOC ID: 3579 CITY OF SAN BERNARDINO — REQUEST FOR COUNCIL ACTION Information/Report From: James Mulvihill M/CC Meeting Date: 01/05/2015 Prepared by: Cheryl Weeks, (909) 384- 5188 Dept: Council Office Ward(s): All Subject: Quarterly Public Bike Ride Event (At Meeting of November 17, 2014, Item Continued to January 5, 2015) (#3579) Current Business Registration Certificate: Not Applicable Financial Impact: None. Motion: Discuss and take possible action. Synopsis of Previous Council Action: None Background: Many cities have regular "community bike rides" as a means of building a strong sense of community, and to raise awareness of bicycling. Initial Thoughts: ❑ The event should begin slowly with announcements through the neighborhood associations. ❑ As the event grows, traffic control may become necessary to assist at street intersections. The inaugural event could be held March 7, 2015, and if successful, the first Saturday of each quarter thereafter (June 5, 2015, September 5, 2015 and January 2, 2016). L The event might begin and end at Meadowbrook Park with Starbucks at 40th and Waterman serving as the northerly point. (Total distance approximately 9 miles) ❑ Several goals have been identified for the community bicycle ride: getting to know the City, making new friends, fostering community fitness and increasing bicycle awareness. ❑ As the event grows, additional more challenging routes, can be added. Updated: 12/9/2014 by Linda Sutherland I Packet Pg. 231 6.B , 3579 Analysis: The San Bernardino community bike ride can achieve multiple community building goals at minimal cost. If the event proves successful, it can expand to include other activities. This item is open to suggestions and modifications. Supporting Documents: Updated: 12/9/2014 by Linda Sutherland 1'.
