PROGRAM 0022COUNCIL MEMBERS
The Common Council is an elected body with legislative powers to enact ordinances, resolutions, policies, and funding actions to enhance the social and economic well-being of the City
and its citizens. Residents within their respective wards elect the seven members of the council to four year terms. Each of the wards has an estimated population of 30,000 residents.
The seven Council Members serve on a number of sub-committees including Personnel Committee, Grants Committee, Ways & Means, and Legislative Review Committee.

The Council Office staff provides Council Members with necessary administrative assistance needed by the Council Members to perform their legislative duties. Duties include the scheduling
of meetings with citizens, department heads, various agencies, providing and obtaining information, answering constituent phone calls, meeting with ward constituents, reporting constituent
concerns, and assisting council members with other related tasks.
The basic function of the Council Office staff is to provide courteous, knowledgeable and confidential administrative
support and assistance to the seven council members. The Council Office staff coordinates, schedules, prepares and distributes agendas for all meetings including:

Special Meetings of the Mayor and Common Council
Legislative Review Committee
Ways & Means Committee
Personnel Committee
Grants Committee
Military
Banner Ad Hoc Committee
Animal Control Ad Hoc Committee
Education Bridge Committee
The Council Office staff manages the schedules and coordinates meetings for the Council Members.
The four three person Council Office staff is committed to providing excellent customer service to all Council Members, Elected Officials, City Departments, and to all the citizens of
San Bernardino.
