AMERICAN LEGION AUXILLlARY DEPARTANIVT OF CALIFORNZA
UNIT MEMBER OF THE YEAR
RICHARD O. REED UNIT 777 DISTRICT 2S
WHEREAS, Sharon Brouse helped start the American Legion Auxiliary Unit 777 over 20 years
ago. Last year, Unit 777 was the recipient of the prestigious Colleen Award. This award is presented
to the Unit that best administers the programs of the American Legion Auxiliary. These programs
include Children & Youth, Community Service and of course, Veterans Affairs & Rehabilitation.
Sharon is always ready, willing and able to assist the Unit, Post, Sons of the Legion and Legion
Riders; and
WHEREAS, Sharon has served two terms as President and has held all offices except
First Vice President. She is currently serving as Treasurer, Chairman of Veterans Affairs and
Rehabilitation, National Security, as well as Constitution and By-Laws. As the Past Presidents
formed the Unit Parley, Sharon accepted the position of Secretary. She is a longtime Partner of Salon
58, 8 and 40; and
WHEREAS, National Security has probably been Sharon's most challenging duty. Collecting,
trimming, sorting by-products and mailing the thousands of manufacturers coupons is certainly a big
job. Sharon always does it with a smile and a thank you as she adds coupons to her stacks. Off
they go into the mail to several countries where our military personnel are stationed; and
WHEREAS, Veterans Affairs & Rehabilitation makes Sharon aware of the needs of the
veterans at the Jerry L. Pettis Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Loma Linda, CA. As soon as Sharon
hears of a need, she is always ready to send funds and assist. She keeps a special spot in her heart
for the veterans at a local extended care home. Gifts at Christmas, Valentine's Day, and other special
days are top priority with Sharon. Knitted caps and lap robes, flowers or cards made by the
members make Sharon and the veterans so happy; and
WHEREAS, Sharon is an outstanding member who makes the American Legion Auxiliary
shine. She is very active in the Post's kitchen, whether shopping, cooking or serving, Sharon's right
there! Sharon records food donations, trains new waitresses, new unit members and serves as
hostess; and
WHEREAS, Sharon's presentation of"In Flanders Fields" at Memorial Day and Veterans Day
ceremonies, assisted by another unit member, brings tears of pride to those attending the service.
Poppy Week is a "must do" activity for Sharon. She proudly serves, offering poppies to the public at a
grocery store. She also decorates the Post Home for holidays and programs.
NOW, THEREFORE, on this occasion, and in appreciation of her leadership, dedication and
impressive contribution to the City of San Bernardino and its citizens, I, on behalf of the Common
Council of the City of San Bernardino, do enjoin, commend, and offer congratulations to
