As part of a national crackdown on impaired drivers, checkpoints will be held during each of the holiday mobilization periods from December 16, 2011, to January 1, 2012, Christmas/New Year and Au ( ) gust 17, 2012, to September 3, 2012, (Labor Day). Additional grant funded checkpoints will be held outside of these mobilization periods. The grant application process consists of the submission of a preliminary on-line application followed by the submission of a signed hard-copy application. The police department has already submitted both of the required applications in order to comply with OTS grant application deadlines. Mini-grant funded checkpoints have proven to be effective in the enforcement of impaired driving statutes and in educating the public about the dangers of impaired driving. The police department has participated in several of these mini-grant programs, which were approved pursuant to City Council actions including 2004-287, 2006-321, 2008-284, 2009-302, and 2010- 314. After conducting an evaluation of available resources and developing a deployment strategy, the police department is requesting funding to conduct ten checkpoints under the 2011-2012 DUI mini-grant program. Two checkpoint operations will be held during the national Christmas and Labor Day mobilization periods. Eight checkpoint operations will be held outside of these mobilization periods. Overtime funding will include two supervisors, one detective, ten officers, and three community service officer positions. Proposed overtime and benefits will be $8,441.91 per checkpoint. Proposed supply funding will be $5,149.92 to facilitate the purchase of checkpoint equipment such as passive alcohol sensor(PAS) device mouthpieces, lighting and generator equipment.
