finance costs of improvements on Highland Avenue.

Recommended Motion:
That Change Order No. One to the contract with Bear Valley Paving,
for the improvement of Highland Avenue, from Denair Avenue to
Boulder Avenue, in accordance with Plan No. 8801 , be approved, to
authorize the Contractor to install an additional 1 ,706 feet of 8-
inch concrete median curb, and substitute 6-inch concrete median
curb for the 8-inch concrete median curb, as shown on the plans, at
an estimated increase of $11 , 391 . 11 in the contract price, from
$552 , 832 . 00 to $564, 223 . 11 .

Approval of Change Order No. One
Contract with Bear Valley Paving for
Improvement of Highland Avenue
The plans for this project were developed in accordance with
Caltrans ' standards, since Highland Avenue was State Route 30 . A
14-foot curbed median was included on the plans.
Normally a curbed median is reduced to 4 feet adjacent to a left
turn lane. However, the paved section was insufficient to meet
Caltrans ' standard lane widths for the sections where left turn
lanes will be provided. The sections of 4-foot wide median,
adjacent to the left turn lanes , were, therefore, not included on
the plans.
The north half of Highland Avenue has been relinquished to the
City of San Bernardino, and the south half will be relinquished
to the City of Highland in the very near future. This means that
Caltrans standards no longer apply, and the 4-foot median
sections can be installed under this contract, in order to
provide a completed median.
The Contractor has submitted a price quote of $7 . 00 per linear
foot for the estimated 1706 feet of curb that will be needed to
provide the 4-foot median sections, and a credit of $550 . 89 for
substituting 6-inch concrete median curb for the 8-inch concrete
median curb as shown on the plans. We have reviewed their price
quotes, and found them to be consistent with current pricing
trends .
The total estimated project cost included an amount of $67, 668
for contingencies, which can be used to finance the cost of this
extra work.
We recommend that the installation of the additional median curb
be approved, for a net estimated increase in the contract price
of $11 , 391 . 11.

lineal foot, for a total cost of $11, 942 . 00 .
2) Install 6-inch concrete curb in lieu of 8-inch concrete curb
as indicated on the plans, at a credit of ($550. 89) .
