Synopsis of Previous Council Action: On July 10, 2014,the Personnel Committee approved the proposed item and recommended that the item be forwarded to the Mayor and Common Council for adoption. "^ BACKGROUND The Police Department is seeking to change the minimum qualifications for Police Officers, aligning the requirements with the entry level Law Enforcement Trainee (LET)job description. At present, the minimum qualifications for the position do not include the requirement that candidates successfully complete a California Peace Officer Standards and Training (P.O.S.T.) Basic Academy course or provide a Basic P.O.S.T. course waiver. Using the P.O.S.T. academy training standards as minimum qualification helps to ensure that all Police Officers have the basic skills needed to carry out the required duties. Candidates that have not completed a California P.O.S.T. Academy can be considered for employment starting as a Law Enforcement Trainee(LET). After completing the training requirements, including graduation from a P.O.S.T. Basic Academy course, an LET is eligible for employment as a Police Officer.
