CITY OF SAN BERM IDINO - REQUEST F, I COUNCIL ACTION
STAFF REPORT
Subject: INITIATION OF A DEVELOPMENT CODE AMENDMENT TO CHANGE THE
BUSINESS SIGNAGE REQUIREMENTS FOR MULTI-TENANT CENTERS.
Mayor and Common Council meeting of September 7, 1993 .
BACKGROUND
The Development Code differentiates between larger (25+ 'acres) and
small (less than 25 acres) multi-tenant centers as far as center
identification signage. The Development Code makes no distinction
between business identification signage for large and small tenant
spaces within the center itself.
Staff has been processing several variance requests for larger
business identification signage. While the applicant may make a
credible argument for larger signage, it is difficult for staff to
make the prescribed findings to support the requests. When
numerous requests are received, it is good planning practice to re-
evaluate the existing regulations and determine if they adequately
address the needs of the City, and the business community.
COSTS TO CITY
Staff estimates that it will cost approximately $1, 000 to complete
an amendment including preparation of the text, staff reports and
ordinance and public noticing. This amount does not include review
by any other departments/divisions.
RECOMMENDATION
I recommend that Planning staff be directed to prepare an amendment
to the Development Code that identifies options for business
identification signage in multi-tenant centers.
