CITY OF SAN BERNARDINO - REQUEST FOR COUNCIL ACTION
STAFF REPORT
RESOLUTION AMENDING AN AGREEMENT
WITH RITA CORONADO FOR THE FURNISHING
OF MENTOR COORDINATOR SERVICES.
The agreement with Rita Coronado for mentor coordinator services is for a term of one year and
is scheduled to expire on April 16, 1996. Funding for the mentoring program came from
matching contributions from the City and the San Bernardino City Unified School District and
totaled $29,000.
Preliminary organization and recruitment did not allow for the placement of any mentors until
September, after the summer recess. As a consequence, adequate savings were realized to fund
the program for the remainder of the fiscal year. Funding for the new fiscal year has been
proposed for Community Development Block Grant funds.
The mentoring program has gotten off to a very sound start. An Advisory Board has been
established and over 40 mentors have been recruited and placed at every middle school in the
district. Recruitment is on-going and continuation of the program will allow for the growth and
results originally expected. The mentoring program has already had a number of successes with
positive feedback from principals, teachers, parents, students and mentors. Approval is
recommended.
