RESOLUTION Whereas, in 1936 during the Great Depression, twin brothers Cleo and Leo Stater opened their first market on West Yucaipa Boulevard with a $boo down payment, and began a journey for Stater Bros. that over next 75 years would create Southern California's largest privately owned supermarket chain operating 167 supermarkets with over 18,000 employees; Whereas, during its first 30 years, Cleo and Leo shepherded the growth of Stater Bros.from a single store to 32 markets in San Bernardino and Riverside counties, built on a business philosophy of paying cash for everything, never buying on credit, and ordering and purchasing only what was actually needed at the time; Whereas, in 1968, the brothers sold their business for $32 million to Long Beach-based Petrolane Corp., and while the new owners continued to open new stores, profits flattened and Stater Bros.' growth stalled until 1981, when San Bernardino native son Jack H. Brown was hired to revive and lead the company; Whereas, Jack Brown began his own supermarket career in San Bernardino as a box boy in the old Berk's Market Spot and then as a young executive at San Bernardino-based Sage's Complete Markets, Jack has since served the supermarket industry for almost 6o years, including 30 years at the helm of Stater Bros. as President, CEO, and Chairman of the Board, and service on the boards of numerous industry groups and charitable organizations; Whereas, under Jack's leadership Stater Bros. has grown to become a Fortune 500 Company with over $4 billion in annual sales and in 2007 consolidated the entire operations of its 18,000 employees in eleven warehouses in seven locations in four cities, to a new state-of-the-art 2.1 million square foot corporate headquarters and distribution center in the City of San Bernardino — the largest food distribution center under-one-roof in the United States; Whereas, while Stater Bros. is now the Inland Empire's largest employer and an award- winning environmental leader in the supermarket industry, the company has never wavered from its core values of treating customers and employees as `family" and offering the highest quality of service and merchandise available for outstanding value; and Whereas, Stater Bros. has and continues to support the City of San Bernardino through its charitable giving and contributions to , numerous community organizations, youth groups, city departments, public safety endeavors, and community events like its 15-year title sponsorship of the largest car show on the West Coast, our very own Stater Bros. Route 66 Rendezvous. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, on behalf of the citizens and businesses of San Bernardino, the Mayor and Common Council do hereby thank and commend Stater Bros. and Jack H. Brown for their 75 years of commitment and dedication to the City of San Bernardino. DATED this 9th dart' of JANUARY, lox ,. VI GI A R EZ PA RICK . MORR > CHAS A.
