March 21, 2011 San Bernardino City Council Mtg.
Honorable Mayor; City Council, & attendees.
I have returned with a year old matter which I posed to this illustrious group on
April 19, 2010. That request was for the Bicentennial Historical Preservation Commission
to designate the house at 2966 Park Ave, in the Del Rosa area of San Bernardino, as one
of the 200 historic sites to be marked with a commorative plaque. The reason being, that it
was the home where the 1St initial meeting of the CSO (Community Service Organization)
was held with Cesar E. Chavez placed at the helm of 12 Chapters in our Southland.
I submitted a book I authored, titled"Inland Empire Paves the Way for Cesar E
Chavez" as testimony& data. The Book documents and names groups and Hispanic
people of San Bernardino, & Inland Empire who were trained and worked with Chavez in
grass roots voter registration, citizenship&education classes from 1954-1960. I proposed
that this merited historical recognition&proof whereby we can claim that Chavez has
early roots in our City. I.e. like McDonald's, Taco Bell & Bakers drive-thru restaurants.
Also joining me that day was the Perez Family---Victor, Ray and Jennie whose
family held meetings at their home in Sn Bdno., &whose brother Louis Perez a Hi School
student&Judy Valles a student at Valley College did volunteer work in CSO also.
I gifted my two books to Mayor Morris at that time, also.
Last year, I posed the matter to The Bicentennial Committee,to Nick Cataldo &
the San Bernardino Historical Society, to Susie Earp, Rabbi Cohen& our City Council
---NOTHING!
In fact, Mr. Marc Grossman, Communications Director from the Cesar Chavez
Foundation in Sacramento, & Ms Farinas, granddaughter of Chavez& representative from
the Chavez Museum in Keene, CA were interested in supporting this worthy cause of our
Hispanic Heritage in America. However, I did not hear from Ms Hazlett, so I could not
make those arrangements for them]to come. j ;w

Now, a year has gone by& I have not heard positive word about our request. I am
back with the matter again, & I would like an answer ASAP as March 31St is Cesar
Chavez's birthday celebration& State Holiday. I hope you will act on this now.
Thank you,
Carmen Dominguez Nevarez II

Carmen Nevarez:
Bernadette Farinas with the Visitor's Center at the National Chavez Center in La Paz(and also one of Cesar's
granddaughters)forwarded your message from last week about appearing before the City Council to join you in supporting
placement of a historical marker at the house where Cesar Chavez conducted his first housemeeting when he was
organizing the San Bernardino chapter of the Community Service Organization in the mid-1950s.
It sounds like a very worthwhile endeavor and we would like to get some further information, including the status of the
proposal and the date and time of the council meeting. Would you please let us know whatever you have or give us your
phone number so we can speak about it?
Many thanks for contacting the Cesar Chavez Foundation. We look forward to hearing from you again soon.
