A grueling 120-mile relay, the race goes through the California desert and eventually reaches the finish line in Las Vegas. Team SBPD competed in the 5001 Division, made up of a combination of sworn police officers and civilian personnel, according to police Capt. Ron Garcia. "This race celebrates the camaraderie of the law enforcement profession, through teamwork and physical fitness," Garcia said. "While we celebrate the outstanding efforts of our runners who train for several months leading up to the race, it would not be possible without the support of our agency and support staff." This is the 20th year the San Bernardino Police Department has participated in the event. "Our team is supported by more than 30 alternate runners, drivers, catchers, support staff and family members who volunteer on their own time and expense to assist with the race," Garcia added. "We finished our race in 15 hours, 36 minutes. Twenty-eight minutes faster than our closest competitors." Another Inland Valley agency also competed in the relay, but in a different category. For the 12th year in a row, Team Ontario Police Department ran in the open division which is made up completely of sworn police officers. "We took 22nd place in our category," team leader, officer Jason Dumont said. "There were 41 teams competing in our division, and this race is physically demanding at times." A runner could be running their individual leg of the relay on a flat to slight inclined plane, and all of a i sudden they could be climbing to 1,000 feet above sea level, Dumont explained. "That's why we train the way we do," he said. "A variation of training regimens begin six months before race day." Team OPD came in with an overall placing of 72 out of the 278 teams that competed in the desert relay. Team SBPD was 30 in the overall standings in this year's desert race, an impressive improvement over its 2013 overall finish of 92. "This is the best finish of any law enforcement agency from San Bernardino County," Garcia said. "We're proud to have represented the San Bernardino Police Department and the city of San Bernardino."
