LOU CHEN
STUDENT OF THE MONTH
Junior — Cajon High School
Lou Chen has been a resident of San Bernardino his entire life. He attended
Ramona-Allessandro Elementary School, and Richardson PREP Middle School. He
received his 8th Grade education in China, and then returned to attend Cajon High School
where he is currently a Junior. Lou will graduate in May of 2015.
Lou's dad, Rong Chen, is an English Professor at California State University,
San Bernardino and his mother, Bomi Hwang, is a Professor of Korean Language at
California State University, San Bernardino. His mother is also a researcher for the
Robert and Frances Museum of Art at California State University, San Bernardino. Lou
has a sister, Sharon, who has received her MBA in Marketing and is now Vice President
of the Health Care Branch at Cohn & Wolfe. His brother, Ethan, an avid violinist, is in
the 8th grade at Chavez Middle School. Lou is fond of his cockatiel, Pippi.
Lou is an International Baccalaureate student with a Grade Point Average of 4.0
unweighted and 4.8 weighted. He loves music and plays the piano and violin. He is the
president of the Academic Decathlon, president of the SAT Prep Club and also the
president of the String Workshop Club.
To add to his accomplishments, Lou was selected to be the student speaker at the
district's community gathering for excellence event and he was part of the 2014 Academic
Decathlon team that took fifth place in the San Bernardino County competition. As part of
the SAT Prep Club, he tutors students so they can improve on their test scores. The
Strings Workshop Club members visit elementary schools and help the music students to
fine tune their skills.
Lou is undecided about his future but will double major with one being in the
area of music. He is exploring options for college but plans to attend a four-year college in
California.
Lou wants students to not take anything for granted. The public school system is
an invaluable part of the city; it is in the students' best interests to take advantage of it.
