4 NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE MAYOR AND COMMON
5 COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SAN BERNARDINO AS FOLLOWS:

7 SECTION 1: The current job description for "Law Enforcement Trainee (LET)" is
8 hereby repealed in its entirety; and
9 SECTION 2: The new job description for "Law Enforcement Trainee (LET),'
10 attached hereto as Exhibit "A" and incorporated herein is hereby approved.

LAW ENFORCEMENT TRAINEE
JOB PURPOSE
Under general supervision, performs assigned duties in support of Police Department activities,
functions and programs; and performs related duties as assigned. Must attend and satisfactorily
complete a "POST approved Basic Academy Course" and the City of San Bernardino Police
Department training within a 1480-hour period from the effective date of hire.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
Law Enforcement Trainee is a non-sworn, temporary classification, which may lead to an entry-
level, professional law enforcement career position with the City of San Bernardino Police
Department following successful completion of California POST approved Basic Academy Course
and City of San Bernardino Police Department training.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The duties listed below are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work that may
be performed. The omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude it from the
position if the work is similar, related or a logical assignment to this class.
1. Must satisfactorily complete the minimum "Functional Areas" as set forth in the California
POST Basic Course. These functional areas include, but are not limited to: Professional
Orientation, Police Community Relations, Law, Laws of Evidence, Communications, Vehicle
Operations, Force and Weaponry, Patrol Procedures, Traffic, Criminal Investigation, Custody,
Physical Fitness and Defensive Techniques.
2. Provides courteous and expeditious customer service to the general public and City
department staffs.
3. Demonstrates a positive attitude towards City and department goals; and, performs related
work as required.
GENERAL QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge of
1. Basic mathematics.
2. Correct English usage, including grammar, punctuation and spelling.
3. Basic computer operations and functions.
Ability to:
1. Conform to stressfully induced conditions.
2. Learn procedures as set forth in the California POST Basic Course and by the
department.
3. Learn the use and care of firearms.

4. Write legibly.
5. Understand and carry out oral and written instructions.
6. Read and comprehend at the twelfth grade level.
7. Speak well and present ideas clearly and effectively.
8. Remember names, faces, facts and details of incidents.
9. Write clear, accurate and comprehensive reports.
10.Operate an automobile skillfully.
11.Type on a computer keyboard.
12.Perform demanding physical training exercises utilizing all parts of the body.
13.Establish and maintain effective relationships with all those contacted in the course of
work.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education, Training and Experience:
A typical way of obtaining the knowledge, skills and abilities outlined above is graduation
from high school or G.E.D. equivalent. Must be at least 20 1/2 years of age at time of
application.
Applicants who have graduated from an accredited institution with an Associate's degree or
higher will not be required to take the written examination. Applicants who have taken the
California POST PELLETB exam within the last 6 months of date of application may submit
their scores on official letterhead to be considered for exemption from the written exam.
POST PELLETB scores from a P.O.S.T. approved institution or verification of completion of
Associate's degree or higher from an accredited school must be submitted with application.
Licenses; Certificates; Special Requirements:
A valid California driver's license and the ability to maintain insurability under the City's
vehicle insurance policy.
For out-of-state applicants, a valid driver's license is required. A valid Class "C" California
driver's license must be obtained within ten days of appointment (CA Vehicle Code 12405c).
Free of any felony convictions.
A citizen of the United States or a permanent resident alien who is eligible for and has
applied for citizenship.
Fingerprinted for purposes of search of local, state, and national fingerprint files to disclose
any criminal record.
Of good moral character, as determined by a thorough background investigation.
Found to be free from any physical, emotional, or mental condition which might adversely
affect the exercise of the powers of a peace officer.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision,
peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee
encounters while performing the essential functions of this class. Reasonable accommodations

The employee may regularly work in outside weather conditions or in an office environment. The
noise level depends on the employee's environment..
