PROPOSAL FOR COMMUNITY FRUIT PARK AND COMMUNITY GARDEN APPROVAL
January 6,2014
Respectfully submitted to the Mayor and Council for the City of San Bernardino-A Proposal
for a Community Fruit Park and a Community Garden at the Nicholson Park Family Learning
and Community Resource Center at 2750 West 2nd Street,San Bernardino,CA.
The Incredible Edible Community Garden was contacted last year by Charle Jacobs,a
community leader in the"Rialto Bench"area of San Bernardino to help start a Community
Garden at the Nicholson Park. Over the past year we were able to secure funding from the
USDA-Forest Service for a Community Fruit Park and a Community Garden for this site.
Background on the Incredible Edible Community Garden (IECG)*
a
IECG is a volunteer-run 501(c)3 California non-profit organization since 2009 providing
'N programs throughout San Bernardino County. Our goal is to provide healthy, accessible and
affordable organic food to those in most need and to give others the tools, skills, and mentorship
k necessary so they can grow their own organic produce or operate an urban farm. Our county-
wide Urban Growing Spaces Initiative provides communities with awareness, education, and
the opportunities to grow their own food and break the cycle of nutrition-related diseases. Our
Initiative aligns with the SBC Healthy Cities Coalitions and the County Vital Signs. It also
provides opportunities to mitigate AB32, SB 375, and regulations on storm water run-off for the
County.
Background on the Proposed Community Fruit Park and Community Gardene
IECG prides itself on community engagement for its projects. This is what makes our projects
sustainable. After securing approval from the City of San Bernardino, for each project IECG
will canvass the community to let them know about the project, set up a community engagement
meeting to provide more detailed information and obtain their buy-in to the project, and then
conduct up to three charrettes for the community to design and plan each project.IECG along
with the community will prepare the site, install a dedicated irrigation system, plant the trees
and construct the garden, install fencing around the Community Garden, and have a
Groundbreaking Event to celebrate each project. In addition,IECG is committing three(3)
years of care and maintenance of the Fruit Park at no cost to the city, and continued oversight
of the Community Garden. We will offer a stipend for up to 10 local youth to be trained in the
care and maintence of fruit trees, and we will train community members who want to take a
leadership role in the community garden.
