STAFF REPORT
SUBJECT
Resolution authorizing the donation of the 1965 Seagrave Tiller Truck and ancillary
equipment to Fire Memories, Inc.
BACKGROUND
On January 6, 2011,. the Fire Department received a request from Fire Memories, Inc.
regarding the possible donation of a fire apparatus (Attachment A). The corporation is
requesting the donation of the fire truck to share in their 1960's era of firefighting
equipment museum.
The City owns a 1965 Seagrave's Tiller Truck, VIN #Q 110, which was in use for
approximately 25 years and retired in 1990. Since 1990 this large vehicle has been stored
at various locations with a plan to perform a complete restoration as a fire museum piece.
However, the equipment is unserviceable at this time and would require a significant
investment in resources to restore. Further, the City does not have a large enough storage
facility to house the truck inside; continued exposure to the elements is causing further
deterioration.
Recently, a non-profit fire museum contacted the City requesting that the vehicle with
equipment be donated as an addition to their museum. The museum is presently relocating
to the Banning/Beaumont area and is operated by Fire Memories, Inc. Therefore, the Fire
Department is recommending that the 1965 Seagrave Tiller Truck and ancillary equipment
be disposed of as a surplus property by donating it to Fire Memories, Inc. for their fire
museum. In accordance with the City of San Bernardino Municipal Code Section
3.04.100(A) (Surplus supplies and equipment), request is hereby made authorizing the
donation of this fire truck and equipment to Fire Memories, Inc.
FINANCIAL IMPACT
There is no financial impact to the City of San Bernardino. The estimated potential
revenue if a buyer were found may be approximately$6,200.
RECOMMENDATION
Adopt resolution.

Dear Chief Conrad;
Fire Memories, Inc. is a 501(c)3,non-profit in California and has been since 1998. The mission
of Fire Memories,Inc. Museum is to maintain properly, the art and artifacts of the collection,to
preserve the history and heritage of firefighting,to serve as a memorial to those who have
dedicated their lives to the fire and emergency services and to educate the public in fire safety and
_ prevention. We are currently discussing with the City of Banning and the City of Beaumont a
location for a permanent home for Fire Memories,Inc.Museum of Firefighting. When a
permanent location is secured,Fire Memories,Inc. wants to add to its museum an Education
Center where public, private, and home schooled children can learn about fire safety and fire
prevention. Within the education center will be a `hands on learning&exploring'area where
children and adults can be taught fire safety and experience the historical apparatus and
equipment that brings a sense of pride to this career of dedication to saving lives.
It is with regard to this museum we are respectfully requesting your donation of the 1965
Seagrave Ladder Truck which would be a great addition to our museum to show the 1960's era
firefighting equipment. The Fire Memories,Inc.Museum contains more than two-thousand,two-
hundred(2200)historical fire related and/or memorabilia items. Some items that are contained in
the museum include: 7 motorized fire apparatus, 17 hand or horse drawn apparatus,a complete
30 foot section of leather fire hose, pompier or scaling ladders, station gongs, fire alarms, fire
hose, 275+fire extinguishers,27 fire hydrants,25 fire helmets, over 2,013 fire department
patches,a variety of fire nozzles, airport fire extinguishers, and too many more items to list
individually. An extensive research library is also part of the museum. Currently, over one-
hundred fire department items are on loan from Fire Memories,Inc. and on exhibit with the
Historical Society of Palm Desert. Also,Applebee's Restaurant, located in Palm Desert, contains
a display of items from our Fire Memories,Inc. Museum along with approximately 55 items on
display at the San Gorgonio Historical Society in Beaumont.
If/when we receive this 1965 Seagrave Ladder Truck,we fully understand that it is our
responsibility to:
♦ House the apparatus is a safe place
