ALEXANDRA (ALEX) HERNANDEZ-ZAPATA
STUDENT OF THE MONTH
ARROYO VALLEY HIGH SCHOOL
Alexandra Hernandez-Zapata was born in Managua, Nicaragua and came to the
United States when she was four years old. She attended Mt. Vernon Elementary
School, Shandin Hills and Dr. Martin L. King, Jr. Middle Schools and Arroyo Valley
High School. She will graduate May 2014 with a GPA (Grade Point Average) of 4.63.
Alex (as she likes to be called) is the oldest of three children. Her brother,
Abraham, is in the seventh grade at Caesar Chavez Middle School and her sister,
Brianna, is in kindergarten at Mt. Vernon Elementary School. Her mother, Alexandra,
works for Ontario Airport Hotel and her father, Nelson, works for Coca Cola. She has a
German Shepherd dog named Ricky.
While at Arroyo Valley High School, Alex has participated in Mock Trials and
the Academic Decathlon. Last year, her team competed at the State level. This year,
Alex earned the title of best defense attorney for San Bernardino County. Her favorite
subject is English. Alex participated in cross country for one year.
Alex likes the faculty at Arroyo Valley High School because they are very
supportive of the students. However, if she could change anything, it would be the food
in the cafeteria. She also hopes they will get an Academic Decathlon Advisor soon.
Alex's community activities are centered on her church which is the Church of
the Nazarene in Colton. She helps with the food distributions and also assists with
teaching and monitoring the young church attenders.
Jiro* Alex has applied to Yale University, Harvard University and UCLA. Her first
choice is Yale, where she plans to major in political science and then become an
attorney. Her advice to students is to never be afraid of dreaming big.
