Financial Impact:
The overall Charter 186 financial impact for the Fire Safety group will result in an increase of
$239,158.65 to the General Fund.
Motion: Adopt the Resolution.
Synopsis of Previous Council Action:
On March 4, 2013, the Mayor and Common Council approved the establishment of salaries for
Fire Department Ranges P-1 (Firefighter), P-2 (Paramedic), P-3 (Fire Engineer), and P-4
(Captain/Fire Investigator), effective August 1, 2012.
Background:
Section 186 of the City Charter establishes a formula for setting salaries for local safety
members, effective August 1 of each year. An agreement was reached with the Fire Safety Unit
for the 10 cities to be used for this year's calculations. The salaries of those cities have been
averaged to determine the salaries for 2013 Fire Safety classifications.
The 10 cities selected include:
Antioch Irvine
Concord Orange
Elk Grove Roseville
Garden Grove Salinas
Huntington Beach Simi Valley
2013 MONTHLY SALARY RANGES
Effective August 1, 2013, the new monthly salaries are as follows:

The Firefighter Trainee salary will be set at $4,433.36 per month ($25.58 per hour), which is
80% of the Firefighter(P-1), Step 1, salary.
Adding fringe benefits and other salary driven costs (Ca1PERS, Unemployment, Medicare),
which rise with salary increases, the total increased General Fund cost for salaries and benefits
for the Fire Safety Unit for FY 2013/14 is $56,515.65; overtime costs are estimated to be
$182,643.00, for a projected FY 2013/14 increase of$239,158.65.

5 WHEREAS, San Bernardino City Charter Section 186 requires an annual survey
6 and adjustment of salaries for safety officers.
7 NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE MAYOR AND COMMON
8 COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SAN BERNARDINO AS FOLLOWS:

SECTION 1: Salaries for Fire Department Ranges P-1 (Firefighter), $5,541.70
