RESOLUTION of Trm MAYOR AND COMMON COUNCIL HONORING
JIM GERSTENSLAGER
WESTERN REGION DIRECTOR
FOR
LITTLE LEAGUE BASEBALL & SOFTBALL
WHEREAS, Jim Gerstenslager has served as the Western Region Director of Little League Baseball &
Softball in San Bernardino since 2004 which brings teams from eleven western states, including Alaska and
Hawaii, to San Bernardino every August in a celebration of youth sports. Prior to that time, Jim had served as a
dedicated volunteer for 26 years at the local league level as well as held several appointed advisory positions at
Little League's International Headquarters and was elected to the Little League International Board of Directors
in 2001, serving in that position for 3 years; and
WHEREAS, the Annual Western Region semifinals and finals generate approximately 75,000 visitors to
San Bernardino every July and August, significantly promoting tourism within the community and generating
substantial dollars for local tourist facilities such as hotels, motels and restaurants as well as of for the City by
way of Transient Occupancy Taxes. The finals and semifinals are televised nationwide on ESPN generating a
positive image for San Bernardino across the United States; and
WHEREAS, as a longtime volunteer and employee of Little League Baseball & Softball, Jim has
understood and promoted the true objective of the program; that being to use the playing of baseball and softball
as the tool to teach proper fundamentals of life to the children in order for them to grow into healthy adults of the
future;and
WHEREAS, Jim Gerstenslager undertook and supervised a $2.5 million modernization and upgrade to
the Little League facility in the Verdemont area of the City so positioning Little League to remain a fixture of
San Bernardino, as well as the youth sports community,for the next forty years. He has been a member of the
Board of Directors of the San Bernardino Convention and Visitors Bureau since 2009, serving as its Chairman in
2011 and 2012, diligently marketing and promoting tourism to San Bernardino so greatly contributing to the
economic wellbeing of the many tourist facilities in the City; and
WHEREAS, Jim Gerstenslager has faithfully served on the advisory board of the San Bernardino
Chapter of the YMCA. For his monumental contribution to the wellbeing of the City, in so many areas, the
San Bernardino Area Chamber of Commerce was proud to name Jim Gerstenslager Citizen of the Year for 2012;
and
WHEREAS, Jim Gerstenslager, and Roxann, his wife of forty three years, will be retiring in August of
2013 after a long and illustrious career of generous contribution to society.
NOW, THEREFORE, on this occasion, and in appreciation of his leadership, dedication and impressive
contribution to the City of San Bernardino and its citizens, we, on behalf of the Mayor and Common Council of the
City of San Bernardino, do enioin, commend and thank
