Synopsis of Previous Council Action:
None
Background:
At a recent meeting of the Alessandro Neighborhood Association, there was a request to evaluate
the intersection of Herrington Avenue and Spruce Street for two-way stop controls. The
neighborhood group is concerned about traffic safety at this intersection. Currently, this
intersection is controlled by "Yield" signs on the north and southbound approaches. The
neighborhood group felt that with increased traffic in this area, this intersection should be
evaluated for stop controls.
Traffic Engineering staff evaluated the intersection including collision history, traffic volumes,
and road conditions in accordance with the California Manual on Uniform Traffic Control
Devices (CA MUTCD). Based upon this evaluation, staff has determined that installation of stop
controls is appropriate for this location and it would improve operation of the intersection.
Staff, therefore, recommends that the attached Resolution be approved authorizing the removal
of the "Yield" signs and the installation of stop controls (signs and markings) on the north and
southbound approaches to the intersection.

The proposed Resolution also includes two-way stop controls at the intersection of Spruce Street
and Garner Avenue. These stop controls are existing and were approved under Resolution No.
2482. For consistency, it is recommended that this additional location be included with the
subject Resolution(No. 655).
