PROCLAMATION of THE MAYOR & COMMON COUNCIL
DESIGNATING May 6, 2013
AS
"SILL , LRD DAY"
WHEREAS, William H. Bird, businessman, husband, father, grandfather,
and great-grandfather, is retiring from Bird Refrigeration after 62 years in business. For
80 years, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 12 months a year, Bird Refrigeration, a
family-owned business, was dedicated to serving the Inland Empire. On May 4, 2013,
Bill Bird turned the key one last time. It was his absolute pleasure and honor to serve the
City of San Bernardino; and
WHEREAS, Bill is a native of San Bernardino and has been married to the love of
his life, Beverly, for 63 years. He first worked with his Dad by being handed tools when
he was only 12 years old and, in 1951, at the age of 19 Bill'started his career working
with his father at 129 E. 4th Street; and
WHEREAS, Bill is a cowboy at heart who loves a good Western. He is also a
.dancer, an artist, humorist, golfer, fisherman, hunter, counselor and mentor. Bill, his two
brothers and sister were partners at Bird Refrigeration for 38 years, and Bill has remained
President and CEO until his retirement. Bill Bird is a champion of local business and a
believer in the American Dream and possesses a tremendous entrepreneurial spirit; and
WHEREAS, Bill Bird is a walking, talking, wealth of knowledge concerning the
history of San Bernardino. Bill is known for his dedication to the Inland Empire and the
City of San Bernardino. His customers, friends, family, and those who know him realize
he is a man of his word and his handshake is as good as a written contract. Bill has
dedicated his time, energy and lifetime not only to his family, but also for the love and
loyalty of the business; and
WHEREAS, among the 6,000 customers Bill has in his database, he thinks his most
prominent are likely to include San Manuel Casino (280 tons installed), Carousel Mall
(100 tons installed) and work for the Arrowhead Elks Lodge. He's also worked with
companies owned by former Mayors Bob Holcomb and Al Ballard. Bill gave his heart and
soul for the community in everything he did and the City of San Bernardino will be forever
grateful to him.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that on behalf of the Mayor and Common
Council, in recognition of his dedication, accomplishments and leadership to the City of
San Bernardino we do hereby proclaim this Day of May 6, 2013 as "Bill Bird Day".
