Below is a quick outline on our students and what they have accomplished: Early this month our San Bernardino students were overwhelmed with excitement as they represented San Bernardino and Technical Employment Training (TET)in a statewide machining competition. Jon Wiesseman, Marcos Martinez, Rico Miranda and Jose Becerra are enrolled at TET, where they learned their machining skill sets, employability skills and each earned two NIMS credentials. TET is an active chapter in SkilIsUSA California, when presented with the opportunity to showcase their skills and what they have learned in the training program. They all jumped at the opportunity and signed up to compete. First they competed regionally, amongst other schools in the San Bernardino, San Diego and High Desert area for an opportunity to advance to the state competition. They successfully meet their challenge and were granted a spot to compete statewide in their competition. All four students competed at the state competition held in San Diego against other machining students in the state of California. San Bernardino and TET were well represented, when the students returned home from San Diego with three gold medals and one silver in the following categories: CNC Turning, Precision Technology 1 (Turning) and Precision Technology 2 (Milling). All four students were assisted through the Workforce Investment Board and the Transitional Assistance Department with training dollars to participate in the training at Technical Employment Training. These individuals all had one thing in common prior to attending TET, long term unemployment.when they all signed up for training, individually they were utilizing the training facility as a last resort to gainful employment. Now with their notable success state wide, their national credentials and industry skill sets, they have now moved from the bottom of the unemployment line to the top of the recruitment list for employers. Two are now employed in the machining industry, while two are weighing out their options with a couple of employers. SkilIsUSA California is a national nonprofit organization serving teachers, high school and college students who are preparing for careers in trade, technical and skilled service occupations, including health occupations. It was formerly know as VICA (Vocational Clubs of America). SkillsUSA's mission is to empower its members to become world-class workers, leaders and responsible American citizens. Through competitions sty erients showcase their skills that are relevant to employer needs at a national level. TET is the culmination of a unified vision of local business, County Schools, Workforce professionals, elected officials and our community to keep America great in manufacturing-.
