Establishment of Salaries for Fire Department Ranges P-5 (Battalion Chief, Fire Management
Bargaining Unit), Effective August 1, 2012, P-6 (Deputy Fire Chief) and P-7 (Fire Chief),
Effective March 18, 2013. (At Meeting of March 4, 2013, Item Continued to March 18, 2013.)

Financial Impact:
The City's FY 2012-13 Charter 186 salary decreases for Fire Management total $7,480.
Motion: Establish the salaries for Fire Department Ranges P-5 (Battalion Chief), effective
August 1, 2012, and P-6 (Deputy Fire Chief) and P-7 (Fire Chief), effective
March 18, 2013; authorize the Human Resources Division Manager to amend
Resolution No. 6429 to reflect the above action; and authorize the Director of
Finance to amend the FY 2012-13 budget.
Synopsis of Previous Council Action:
On December 5, 2011, the Mayor and Common Council approved the establishment of salaries
�d for Fire Department Ranges P-5 (Battalion Chief), P-6 (Deputy Fire Chief) and P-7 (Fire Chief),
effective August 1,2011.
Background:
Section 186 of the City Charter established a formula for setting salaries for local safety
members,effective August 1 of each year. An agreement was reached with the Fire Management
Unit for the 10 cities to be used for this year's calculation. The salaries of those 10 cities have
been averaged to determine the salaries for 2012 Fire Management classifications.
The 10 cities agreed upon for classifications P-5, P-6 and P-7 are:
Burbank Orange
Costa Mesa Pasadena
Daly City Rialto
Garden Grove San Buena Ventura
Ontario Torrance

Adding annual fringe benefits and other salary-driven costs (CalPERS, Unemployment,
Medicare), which rise with salary increases, the total projected decreased General Fund cost for
salaries and benefits for the Fire Management Unit for FY 2012/13 is $7,480.
