Hi Rikke,
I am so excited for the our awesome students and coaches to be recognized by the City
Council. I would like to respectfully request that if possible the City Council recognize both
our Teams 1 and 2. Both of these teams have literally spent hundreds of hours side by side
getting ready for their competition. Both deserve recognition for their performance and
dedication.
Thank you for considering our request. Have a wonderful and restful weekend. I hope that
you continue healing quickly.

Good Morning Councilman,
I am sorry to disturb you, but I was wondering if the council, on March 4th,will be recognizing just my
varsity team going to state or both my varsity team and my junior varsity team(they placed 2nd in their
division at the county competition). There are 18 members total.
Have a wonderful day,

Principal-Gordon Amerson
Gordon Amerson has been extremely supportive of this program since he has become our principal. We
are grateful to him for his continued support and recognition of the Decathlon team. Under his
leadership, this will be the 2nd time we have taken a team to state to represent San Bernardino.
About the Program-Arroyo Valley has participated in the Academic Decathlon program for 12 years.
We have place in the top ten schools for 7 years, and we have placed in the top 5 for the last 5 years. The
students begin their preparation for competition in the spring when the topic is announced. All
Decathletes are enrolled in the summer school program for 4 weeks. All Decathletes are then enrolled
in a 7th period Decathlon class that meets every day in the fall. Beginning in November, students stay
for practice after their 7th period class. In December, students meet for seven days from 9:0o in the
morning to 3:00 in the afternoon for practice. Students are enrolled in a 2nd semester period 7
Decathlon class and continue to meet after school in January and February until 5:00,and they meet
every Saturday in January for six hours a day. The amount of time spent preparing for this competition
well exceeds zoo hours.
Academic Decathlon consists of 10 events-the students write an essay in 5o minutes, give a prepared
31/2 to 4 minute speech,and deliver a 1 1/2 impromptu speech,students give an interview,and take 7
subject- 5o question M/C tests in art, economics, music, math, language and literature, social science,
and science. Lastly, students participate in a Super Quiz event where they answer 12 questions on six
subjects in front of a crowd of people(think Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?).
Students are recruited for the program out of their 9th and loth grade classes. In November, all
participating Decathletes engage in a scrimmage which will determine their placement on a team.
Students must be placed in a category according to their GPA. For instance-A team of 9 students must
consist of 3 students with GPAs of o to 2.99.3 students with GPAs of 3.0 to 3.74,and 3 students with
GPAs of 3.75 to 4.0. Students with the highest scrimmage scores in each category will be placed on the
Varsity team. The rest of the students will be placed on Junior Varsity teams or will become alternates.
Our Junior Varsity team this year placed 2nd! The team members are:Robert Nguyen,Jose
Gonzales,Aaliyah Ricks,Isabel Villalobos, Rene Hernandez,Aimee Orozco,Nathan Swedlove,Elizabeth
Orozco, and Juan Perez. Robert placed ist in interview with a perfect score of l000,Jose placed ist in
essay,Rene placed ist in art,Aimee placed first in economics and she placed ist in her entire division,
Juan placed first in economics, and first in essay, and Elizabeth placed first in Language and Literature.
Thank you very much for this opportunity. The students are very excited to be recognized and to meet
you. This is a wonderful honor and we are very pleased that we can attend, and that we will be
representing the city of San Bernardino in Sacramento on March 14th-i7th.
