Background: The San Bernardino Police Department has applied for participation in the Walmart Foundation Grant Program, administered through their health and welfare section. The purpose of the grant is to ensure children in the community grow up in a healthy environment. Walmart's mission is to create opportunities so people can live better. They consider it their responsibility to make a positive impact in the communities they serve. Whether through the grants they provide to the thousands of organizations that share their mission or through the inspiring volunteer efforts of Walmart associates, they are passionate about helping people live better one community at a time. In 2011, Walmart and the Walmart Foundation gave $958.9 million in cash and in-kind contributions around the world. This included $872.7 million in cash and in-kind gifts in the United States and $86.2 million in cash and in-kind gifts in international markets. In addition, Walmart associates volunteered more than 1 million hours that resulted in more than $13 million in grants to local non profits. The San Bernardino Police Department received$1,500 in grant money last year to assist with"Shop with a Cop." For the past three years, San Bernardino police officers have volunteered their time during the Christmas holiday season to assist with the "Shop with a Cop" event. Members of the Police Department's Crimes Against Person unit will select children who were victims of violent crime during 2012 to participate in the program. Each child will be given the opportunity to shop for holiday gifts at Sam's Club in San Bernardino with an officer or detective from the Police Department. r► The item sought is: Updated: 11/1/2012 by Gwendolyn Waters Packet Pg. 142 2079 C 1.
