Justification

A
• How lone has the Dosition been vacant? -We have not hired any new FF/PM a
Trainee's in over 5 years; currently we have 9 vacant PM/FF positions.
d
M
t
• Why is it critical to fill this position? - These PM/FF's will become part of a
crew to maintain continuity of that crew. This will provide for a more ;L
efficient crew and reduce the impact of the overtime costs associated with
backfilling the position with existing personnel.
E
r
U
• What options were considered?-Due to our total number of vacancies in all m
ranks,a total of 17 at the time of hiring, our only option is to fill these
positions with existing personnel on overtime.
• What is the potential impact of keepine the Dosition vacant in terms of
City/Community services? - We will have to continue to use existing
personnel to cover the vacant positions and the associated overtime costs will
be incurred. Also the number of available personnel to recall in a time of
need will be reduced.
• Is this the result of Personnel Committee action? No.
Packet Pg.48
1 6.D.e
• If hirin¢at a salary above step 1,why? They will be hired as Trainees once
they have completed training(approximately 3 weeks)they will begin as
PM/FF's Step 1.
