HomeMy WebLinkAbout03.A- Presentation 7 wSn t 11 no RESOLUTION OF THE MAYOR AND COMMON COUNCIL COMMENDING MITLA CAFE on their 75TH ANNIVERSARY WHEREAS, Mitla Cafe has been serving the people of San Bernardino for 75 years. Located on San Bernardino's West side and an original portion of the Historic Route 66, Mitla Cafe is one of the oldest businesses in San Bernardino. The family owned restaurant was established in 1937 by Lucia Rodriguez. She ran it with the help of her daughters Theresa Guillen, Helen Martinez, and Vera Lopez. Lucia died in 1981 and Vera took over the business. Vera ran the Mitla with a passion and understanding that community was everything. Vera passed in 1984 and the family's youngest son Frank Montano continued to run the business. With the help of his wife Irene Montano, the restaurant continues to put out quality authentic Mexican food and serve the community that has supported it for so many years; and WHEREAS, Steven Oquendo has been the General Manager of Mitla Caf6 for the past 5 years. Lucia and Salvador Rodriguez are Steven's great-grandparents; and WHEREAS, Dick Clark, Sammy Davis, Jr. and Rosemary Clooney are stars who have dined at Mitla Cafe over the years; and WHEREAS, Mitla Cafe has hosted hundreds of political community fundraisers; and WHEREAS, over the last 75 years, Mitla Cafe has provided excellent meals and customer service to our local railroad employees, city employees, including public safety, elected officials, the neighborhood, and others who enjoy a great home cooked meal, and WHEREAS, Mitla Cafe is the oldest business in the 1St Ward and has served as an anchor on the Mt. Vernon Corridor; and WHEREAS, in 2012, Mitla Cafe was featured in the following media: The New York Times, The Press Enterprise, Los Angeles Weekly and National Public Radio. The media has given Mitla Cafe a high rating for their longevity, food and service. Mitla Caf6 is the longest successful business on the West side of San Bernardino; and WHEREAS, Mitla Cafe is in the process of being profiled on the Food Network Channel's Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives, hosted by Guy Fieri. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED on this occasion on behalf of the Mayor and Common Council of the City of San Bernardino, we do hereby celebrate, honor and acknowledge JUTM CAFt on their 75th ANMVERSARY DATED this 4th day of SEPTEMBER, 2012.
