Synopsis of Previous Council Action:
N/A
Backaround:
The memorial statue of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. ("Statue") located in front of City Hall has
been a an important landmark in the community for over thirty years. However, the statue is in
need of repair due to the natural consequences of the environment, as well as lack of regular
upkeep and maintenance. Therefore, the Martin Luther King Statue Committee("Committee")
has been formed by community members to raise money and oversee the restoration and
beautification of the statue. The Memorandum of Understanding recognizes the Committee's
desire to raise money for the project and grants the Committee the authority to oversee the
restoration and beautification of the statue, at no cost to the City.
Since the Committee is not a 501(c)(3)corporation, the agreement is also with the SBBCF, a
501(c)(3)non-profit corporation, in order for the SBBCF to receive, hold and disburse funds for
that purpose.
