PROCLAMATION OF
THE MAYOR AND COMMON COUNCIL
COMMENDING
STEPHAN AND MARK'JANE HAUER
HAUER STEEL
WHEREAS, Stephan Hauer's journey started in World War II, at age 12 where he worked as
a blacksmith's apprentice in Austria taking care of his family of three siblings after both parents died
from illnesses in Yugoslavia; and
WHEREAS, In 1950, Stephan Hauer didn't know a word of English when he immigrated to
the United States where he found employment at a steel fabrication plant in the City of
San Bernardino; and
WHEREAS, Stephan learned English through watching television and going to night school to
obtain his citizenship. Soon, he married and settled down with his beautiful bride Mary Jane on
April 14, 1956, one year after they met at a local Italian restaurant; and
WHEREAS, In 1959, Stephan and Mary Jane Hauer created Hauer Steel on a small piece of
property on the corner of 9th and Preston Streets where Mary Jane was the bookkeeper, they
successfully ran the company in the City of San Bernardino at the same location for 50 years; and
WHEREAS, Hauer Steel is well known and responsible for the fabrication of steel that was
used to construct buildings throughout the City of San Bernardino such as the building where EDA is
located on 2^d Street, buildings near the Edwards Mansion, the old Sun Newspaper building that now
houses the Sports University, many buildings at the old Norton Air Force Base, the Jack Brown
building at Cal State University, San Bernardino, the remodels to the Fontana Kaiser Hospital, and of
course more than 150 Stater Bros. markets, and over 6,000 projects; and
WHEREAS, After 50 years ofputting their hearts and souls into this business, the Hauers'are
retiring. Stephan and Mary Jane Hauer always believed to do a good job and ensure everything is
always done right the first time. They are people of integrity who always charged a fair price.
NOW, THEREFORE, be it resolved that on behalf of the Mayor and the Common Council
of the City of San Bernardino we do hereby honor, commend, and offer our best wishes in their
retirement to
