CITY OF SAN BERNARDINO — REQUEST FOR COUNCIL ACTION
Staff Report
Subject:
REQUEST TO RENAME THE PERRIS HILL SWIM CENTER TO THE JERRY LEWIS
SWIM CENTER IN HONOR OF REPRESENTATIVE JERRY LEWIS.
Background:
At the request of Mayor Valles, the Park and Recreation Commission considered the renaming of
the Perris Hill Swim Center in honor of Representative Jerry Lewis. After discussion, the
Commission approved the renaming and directed that the request be forwarded to the Mayor and
Common Council for approval.
This swimming pool has a long and interesting history and Representative Lewis is an integral
part of it. Most significantly, it was Representative Lewis' efforts that resulted in the renovation
of this facility in 1993 through a$1 million Special Purpose Grant from the federal government.
The Perris Hill Park Municipal Swimming Pool was first opened in 1936. The pool was
operable through 1991 at which time the age of the pool resulted in structural failures. In its last
year of operation, the pool was losing an estimated 70,000 gallons of water a day due to
deteriorated plumbing. When Congressman Lewis learned of the problems with the pool, he
immediately took action to include a$1 million Special Purpose Grant for renovation of the pool
in a HUD appropriations bill.
Representative Lewis had a special fondness for this pool. He frequented the pool as a youngster
and later worked there as a lifeguard as well. His aquatic skills learned at Perris Hill, lead to
scholarship opportunities and a State freestyle championship.
Financial Imnact:
None
Recommendation:
It is recommended that this pool be renamed in honor of Representative Jerry Lewis for all his
contributions to the Community and in particular to the aquatic facility.
