INLAND EMPIRE SECTION The National Council of Negro Women was awarded $5,800 in Fine Arts Commission funds for the Fiscal Year 1993-94 . Two performances were to have been presented in May, 1994. One of the performances, "Bertram Miller plays Mozart, " is still scheduled as planned. Due to unforeseen circumstances, the purchase of two hundred seats for the opening night of Duke Ellington's "Sophisticated Ladies" is no longer possible, because of the cancellation of this production by the Civic Light Opera. The NCNW has found a suitable substitute for this performance and is requesting the Mayor and Common Council 's approval for an amendment to the original funding agreement. The NCNW is not requesting additional funding. They are asking to be allowed to use the funds previously awarded for "Sophisticated Ladies" to pay for the costs associated with the substitute performance. The substitute performance will be a one woman show titled "Spirit Awakening. " Written, directed and performed by Princess Akuyoe of Ghana, it traces her aristocratic beginnings, education in England, schooling in Harlem, and her ultimate celebration of self. "Spirit Awakening" is scheduled for Saturday, May 14, 1994 , at the Sturges Center for the Fine Arts at 8: 00 P.M. - The Fine Arts Commission voted unanimously at the April 12 , 1994 regular meeting to approve this substitution and forward the request to the Mayor and Common Council. 1 i@ A"ationa1 Council of Negro Women, Inc.
