CITY OF SAN BERNARDINO - REQUEST FOR COUNCIL ACTION
Staff Report
Subiect:
2008-2009 Holiday Closure Days
Backl!:round:
This year the Christmas and New Years holidays fall in the middle ofthe week, on Wednesday
(December 24 & December 31) and Thursday (December 25 & Janu~ I). Due to the
traditionally limited customer traffic on December 26th and January 2" ,staffhas recommended
that City Hall be closed on those days with employees required to use their own vacation,
holiday, or administrative leave if it is a regularly scheduled workday for them.
City Hall will still be open for business on the Monday and Tuesday of each holiday week. It is
anticipated that there will be little public traffic on these days.
Human Resources Department staff met and conferred with SBPEA on the closure dates. Closing
on both Fridays makes the amount of time each employee would need to take off more equitable.
Since most employees are on a 9/80 work schedule with alternating Friday's off, closing on both
Fridays would require them to use their own time for only one of the closure dates.
This closure does not impact Police or Fire operations, or any other critical operations.
Attached is a listing of departmental availability during Holiday Closure 2008 & 2009.
The miscellaneous bargaining units (General, Mid-Management and Confidential/Management
and Unclassified) concur with the above recommendations.
Financial Impact:
There is no financial impact for this action.
Recommendation:
That the Mayor and Common Council authorize the closure of City Hall on Friday, December
26,2008 and Friday, January 2, 2009 and require affected employees to take off those days,
using their own accrued leave.
