Subject:
The creation of the San Bernardino Hometown Heroes Military Banner Program.
Back!!round:
Cities throughout the State of California have adopted military banner programs. Some of those
cities are Pomona, Chino Hills, Orange, Anaheim, Downey, Simi Valley, Montclair, Huntington
Beach, Rancho Cucamonga, Glendale, Carlsbad, Corona and Fontana. The cost of the banners
for those cities range from $150 to $400 which includes the banner, hardware and installation.
The size of the banners range from 2 Y:z' x 7' to 3' x 9'.
Financial ImDact:
There is no cost to the General Fund. Purchase of banners is funded entirely through donations.
Recommendation:
That the San Bernardino Hometown Military Banner Program be discussed and possible action
taken.

San Bernardino Hometown Heroes Military Banner Program
The San Bernardino Hometown Heroes Military Banner Program will recognize the brave men
and women of San Bernardino currently serving in the United States Armed Forces. The
personalized banners will be displayed on light poles up and down major streets throughout the
city to honor, celebrate and remind residents of their dedication to our country.
Criteria
To qualify, honorees must meet the following criteria:
~ Active duty member of the United States armed forces; and
~ Current City of San Bernardino resident; or . ~
~ Have graduated from a San Bernardino high school;-"br

The military banners will be on display continuously at various locations "throughout the City.
The banners will be installed by the City and rem'ove'd...when"th~;banner is d1.m~ed or the service
person is no longer in the military. The-"City will not-be ).etpon{ible for replacing ~anners that are

stolen, damaged or destroyed due to sun, weather, age;.. vandalism or any act of nature beyond

Purchase of banners is fundea, entirely through'" donations.; Banner cost is $$$$ (to be

Applicatio~s will be acceptid ~ an on-going basis. Banners will be raised in the order that the
application was r~ceived as long ~s there are sufficient funds in the donation account to do so. If
a banner application'was received .prior to the installation date and there are not sufficient funds
to produce and raise t~",~anner, that application will be processed for the next installation date
provided funds are available{t that time.

Based on funding available, priority will be given to servicepersons who are current residents of
the City of San Bernardino. Applications that are accompanied by the banner fee of $$$$, will
be produced and raised at the next installation date.
How to donate
Donations in support of the Military Banner program are accepted to defray cost of the banners.
Donors will be recognized on the City of San Bernardino Website. Donations can be sent to (to
