RESOLUTION OF THE MAYOR AND COMMON COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF
SAN BERNARDINO DESIGNATING FEBRUARY 6,2011 AS "RONALD REAGAN
DAY"
WHEREAS, Ronald Wilson Reagan was born on February 6, 1911 in Tampico, Illinois
to Nelle and John Reagan; and
WHEREAS, in 1966, he was elected Governor of California by a margin of a million
votes; he was re-elected in 1970; and
9 WHEREAS, Ronald Reagan won the Presidential Nomination in 1980. Voters

troubled by inflation and a year-long confinement of Americans in Iran swept the Republican
ticket into office. Reagan won 489 electoral votes to 49 for President Jimmy Carter; and
WHEREAS, Ronald Reagan was the first United States president, after President
Dwight D. Eisenhower to get re-elected and finish two complete terms in office. He was
president from January 20, 1981 to January 20, 1989; and
WHEREAS, one of Ronald Reagan's biggest accomplishments in his presidency was
the restored confidence in the American spirit and the longest economic expansion in our
country's history. Ronald Reagan's commitment to our Armed Forces contributed to the
restoration of pride in America, her values, and those cherished by the free world. His vision of
"peace through strength" led to the end of the Cold War; and
WHEREAS, on June 12, 1987, President Reagan spoke to the people of West Berlin at
the base of the Brandenburg Gate. He said to General Secretary Gorbachev, "if you seek peace,
if you seek prosperity for the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe, if you seek liberalization:
Come here to this gate! Mr. Gorbachev, open this gate! Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall!"
The address he delivered on that date is considered by many to have affirmed the beginning of

the end of the Cold War. November 9 through 11, 1989, the people of free Berlin tore down
that wall; and
WHEREAS, Ronald Reagan's commitment to the nation's children helped lower crime
and drug use in our neighborhoods; and
WHEREAS, in observance of Ronald Reagan Day all schools and public institutions
are encouraged to remember the life of Ronald Reagan, recognizing his accomplishments, and
familiarizing students with the contributions that he made to the nation and to the world.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the City of San Bernardino does
hereby proclaim the day of February 6, 2011 as "Ronald Reagan Day" in recognition of his
accomplishments and leadership.

I HEREBY CERTIFY that the foregoing Resolution was duly adopted by the Mayor
