STAFF REPORT
There have been several recent occurrences of fires in high rise
structures. Many agencies are considering legislation to require
high rise buildings to be retrofitted with automatic fire sprinklers.
Fire sprinklers were not installed in City Hall at the time of
construction, since they were not required by the Uniform Building
Code in effect at that time.
Due to the high occupancy of City Hall, it is proposed to install
an automatic fire sprinkler to provide additional fire protection
for employees and visitors. It is our understanding that there have
been no multiple fatalities in a building equipped with automatic
fire sprinklers.
We recommend that a finding be made that an automatic fire sprinkler
system is needed for health and safety reasons.
