Honorable Mayor and Common Council 300 North n Street San Bernardino, Ca. I April 2001 Dear Honorable Mayor Judith Valles and Common Council Jack and Fay Rodgers have been pillars in our community for many a year. Jack Rodgers a retired professional musician, volunteered for years as the accompanist to the Prime Time Caroliers, a group of SO-plus seniors, sponsored by the Parks and Recreation Department. He volunteered his skills at a variety of senior events by playing the piano, such as senior centers anniversary celebrations, spring fashion shows, and other senior center special event. This past November 2000, Jack answered God's call. Jack had served his time here on earth with his loving wife Fay and their children. It was now time to go to his Heavenly reward. I like to think of Jack teaching angels and the baby's yet to be born, his musical skills. Fay was not only a loving wife and mother, but she had JIlany other hidden talents. She is a retired schoolteacher and principal. I have always said, "Teach our children not only the four R's, but also to be loyal citizens, as some day we will have to live under the laws that they will make." Fay was lli . . . the 8 grade teacher of our Honorable Mayor, Judith Valles. For Fay, retirement didn't mean sitting home knitting. In 1984 she suffered a stroke that kept her hospitalized more than two months, and confined to a wheelchair for several more. Fay's answer to the stroke was, "You know you can be an invalid if you want to. I just had to keep busy." And that she did! - She served as a hospice volunteer for a number of years. - Also served as a Senior Legislator. Fay was an original member of the Senior Affairs Commission from Dec. 11, 1986 to the present time. She served as chairperson of the commission from July 1987 until July 1996. Fay is the recipient ofthe George Webster Award, for being the outstanding Senior Citizen of the year. Another qualification for that award is you had to give over 50 years of community service. Fay was instrumental in a number of accomplishments on behalf of Senior Citizens. These include: - Advocating the constructions of Perris Hill Senior Citizens Center, helping to influence the Mayor and Common Council to support it. Coordinating the first Senior Input -Output conference, which attracted hundreds of seniors and provided them with valuable information on issues of concerns to seniors. She served as Chairperson on the Perris Hill Advisory Committee. Fay hosted "Senior Times" television show on public access channel that provided valuable information to seniors. It is for these reasons that I would like to propose we name the dining room at Perris Hill Senior Center, 'The Jack and Fay Rodgers Dining Room.' Sincerely Q~/1'~ c:fosephine A.
